Our Ph.D. participants: testing a new
course on library use and information retrieval.
This EUNITE-course
(initiated by the Helsinki University of Technology) is
meant as a test-project in order to create such a course
especially for the users of the Campus Library Arenberg.
As a test-group we chose to start with a limited group
of Ph.D. students from the faculty of applied sciences.
Our aim is to acquaint you with the most important scientific
information sources within your field, to help you select
and search efficiently both printed as well as electronic
information and make you aware of the information evaluation
methods. The course is divided into three parts.
Start the course by going through the material. In every
part there is something to read and some excercises that
you need to prepare. The last part involves an excercise
where you are expected to search for literature about
a topic in your field.
The course tutor.
During the 3 different parts of the course you will frequently
be confronted with "the course tutor". In our
test-course this term covers all the cluster
librarians or information-specialists [Please follow
the link: Our Organization > Contact & Staff >
Clusters], together with our campus librarian and the
coördinator of the e-sources.
Mailing-list and other tools.
For all your questions or keeping in touch with each other,
we have created a special mailing-list:
EUNITE-request@LISTSERV.CC.KULEUVEN.AC.BE
. In this way we, as library staff, can find out how we
can avoid problems in our final version of the course.
To give you the opportunity to get a first impression of
the course, we organize an introductory session on Friday
the 5th of March at 2 p.m. in our Library Multimedia Room
(first floor, next to cluster 6).
An important remark: if you do your search off-campus, remember
that most databases and electronic journals have been
acquired with licence agreement for the K.U.Leuven and
cannot be used e.g. from the IP-address of your working
place. The use of the electronic campus library is possible
through KOTNET.
To work through the course does not necessarily require
a visit to the physical library. But you are welcome to
do so! There are workstations at the Campus Library reserved
for users where you may work on your assignments. The
information specialist on duty is also prepared to help
you on matters regarding this course.
Feedback.
At the end of part 3, you have to settle scores !! Please
fill out our feedback form.
